Yet Another Warning to Watch for Cyclists

Today’s article by Patrick Orr in the Idaho Statesman in connection with an accident involving a cyclist caught my attention for a couple of reasons. First, I had posted a brief reminder just last week on my blog to remind folks to watch out for cyclists and pedestrians as the weather warms up and more people are out and about.

The second thing that caught my attention was the road upon which Mr. Pavlis was riding when he was struck. Although I am not familiar with the intersection of Hill Road and Smith Road, where the accident took place, I am familiar with a stretch of Hill Road not far from where I live.

The Proverbial Accident Waiting to Happen

The particular section of road is between Gary Lane and Pierce Park. It is winding through this area and in sections the shoulders or bike lanes become narrow to the point of non-existence. With some difficulty with visibility and cyclists riding two abreast, it is just a matter of time before an accident will happen.

No Perfect Solution

Wider bike lanes would be an improvement, but the visibility will always be a problem. One thing that will definitely help would be for motorists and cyclists to use extra care while traveling Hill Road.
