According to the National Council of State Legislatures, nearly 6,000 teen drivers were killed in 2002 in auto accidents. Over 300,000 were injured that same year. More than $42 billion were incurred in costs for emergency services, medical treatment and property damage. THE FACTS
More and more states have acted to reduce the risks of teen driving by enacting laws that issue graduated licenses to teenage drivers.
Graduated Licenses Can Help Teens Survive Learning to Drive
What is a graduated license? The idea of a graduated license places more restrictions on driving privileges based on the age and experience of the driver. Most of us would be familiar with the first step or obtaining a learner permit. Instead of graduating from the learner stage to a complete and unrestricted license, other steps or grades are included such as an intermediate level between ages 16-18 with restrictions such as number of passengers and/or night driving after a certain hour.
Parents Are Also a Key Resource for Teenage Driver Safety
In addition to better laws to transition teen drivers into adult drivers, parents need to know their teenagers, give them proper instruction and supervision, and counsel with their teenagers about the importance of safe driving practices.
